New NDP leader's socialist policies 'a road to poverty': Stockwell Day

While government-run businesses like grocery stores sound “appealing” on the surface, former Reform Party leader Stockwell Day told The Ezra Levant Show this is “a road to poverty for many people and less prosperity for all of us.”

The New Democrats have officially found the successor to replace Jagmeet Singh. Avi Lewis, a prominent left-wing activist and former journalist captured a 56% in the first round of the party's leadership vote, securing his victory.

Among the campaign promises Lewis made were creating a “wealth tax,” capping rent increases and developing more government-run housing, creating government-run grocery stores, restricting AI data centres among others.

On this Tuesday's episode of The Ezra Levant Show, former federal opposition leader Stockwell Day joined Ezra to discuss how Lewis could shift the NDP even further to the left — and whether New Democrats could regain the seats lost under Singh's tenure as leader.

“The thing I like about Avi Lewis is he's a very honest socialist,” the former Reform Party leader began. “All of his thinking is significantly and severely left wing, and I think that he may some audience there,” he said, speculating Liberals who lean more toward socialism may be enticed to support the Lewis's NDP.

“I'm worried there's a trend among young people to go full socialist or even communist,” remarked Ezra, pointing out how many young people's experiences with capitalism are linked to issues like student debt as a reason why Lewis's socialist messaging may resonate with these voters.

“That's what I'm worried about,” replied Stockwell. Younger Canadians have grown up with an education system that was “basically culturally Marxist” before shifting to post-secondary schools that were “vastly” of the same far-left views, and after all, “who doesn't like the sound of getting 'free' stuff?”

Not only have these socialist and communist ideas been tried around the world, he continued, but “a number of cities in the United States have actually tried” creating government-run grocery stores. While this “looks appealing” on the surface, “it's always a dismal failure.”

Younger people aren't aware that the biggest financial issue is “governments borrowing and spending borrowed money,” something Stockwell described as “the single greatest reason for a dollar losing power” that will inevitably lead to “financial disaster.”

Instead of getting involved in business, governments “should be there to regulate, to make sure things are safe,” not “taking tax dollars to prop up failing business practices.” Doing so is “a road to poverty for many people and less prosperity for all of us.”

Is it fair that ignorant and foolish people live in poverty? Why do I need to learn, anyway? Isn’t a pure heart more important than a functionning head?

NDP want fast communism while the Liberals are working on slow motion communism. The Liberal approach fools more fools than that of the NDP.
