NZ vegan cafe adds meat to menu to stay afloat

A vegan cafe in Auckland has sparked controversy after deciding to introduce meat to its menu in response to rising operational costs.

Morningside's Kind Cafe, previously a mostly plant-based establishment, has reluctantly chosen to serve meat to survive financially. Manager Nigel Cottle explained that escalating costs across various sectors necessitated this significant shift.

"Pretty much every single cost that we've had has gone up over the past few years," Cottle told NZ media. "Whether it's rent, whether it's staff, whether it's food, just every part of the café business has gone up."

Cottle noted that the cafe needed a 50% increase in turnover, prompting the decision to introduce meat.

Previously, 80% of the menu was vegan, catering to their 20% vegan customer base. Now, about 30% of the menu will feature meat products, including line-caught fish and free-range organic chicken, which Cottle believes are more ethical options.

Despite consulting with the vegan community, the decision has not been universally accepted. Cottle acknowledged the backlash but emphasised that without these changes, the cafe faced potential closure.

"We can just see that pressure is going on, and the spending patterns change," Cottle added, describing a steady decline in customers and a shift towards cheaper menu options.

The hospitality industry at large has faced a tough few years, with a recent Restaurant Association survey revealing that 78% of Auckland businesses and 76% nationwide reported significantly worse revenues compared to the previous year.

"The recent closures in our industry exemplify the harsh reality many businesses are facing," said Restaurant Association chief executive Marisa Bidois.

"These closures serve as stark reminders of the challenges currently confronting the hospitality sector."
