Student Journalism Conference 2026
The Democracy Fund will host its fifth annual Student Journalism Conference in Toronto from August 28–30, 2026.
This year’s theme focuses on citizenship and civil liberties.
See full details at StudentJournalismConference.com.
Successful applicants will take part in a three-day intensive program covering the fundamentals of modern journalism, with a focus on digital reporting and the civil liberties challenges facing Canadians today.
Through lectures and hands-on sessions, attendees will learn practical skills, explore emerging trends, and understand the importance of journalistic integrity in an increasingly censored media environment.
A highlight of the weekend: participants will work in teams on a real-world reporting assignment, judged by a panel of senior journalists — with a grand prize for the winning group.
This is a fully funded opportunity. Travel (economy class), accommodations, and meals are all covered for successful applicants.
Beyond training, the conference doubles as a job fair — giving attendees direct access to journalists, editors, and media organizations. Additional opportunities include:
- Professional headshot booth
- Pitch review sessions
- “Ask an Editor” office hours
