This new Alberta government has definitely made a blazing start in disenfranchising the tax paying group they so depend on to pay for all their “Diversification” Plans. I have no idea, but let’s say she is 5 feet, 5 inches tall. She would then have to be 241 pounds, in order to have a BMI of 40.

i havent seen any comments on why ban smoking as opposed to junk food, etc.. the obese, etc aren’t directly harming other’s with their 2nd hand smoke . yes they self harm and may do injustices by their modelling behaviors – to their children. however they dont directly impact the health of those around them.

This is why i believe marijuana should be legal. Why should any politician tell me what the good or bad choices are about my health. It is even more disgusting that they use children as a reason to punish adults.

Alcohol is glamorized all the time, the world is full of flavoured alcohol and no one does anything to try to prevent children from drinking.

This truly is government hypocrisy at its finest. All political parties included.

I found it interesting that Ezra had put “morbidly obese” in quotes. Turns out, as reported by the Edmonton Journal, that an Alberta Tory party executive included those words in a Facebook post: “Our morbidly obese Health Minister Sarah Hoffman is going to ban the sale of menthol tobacco produces in Alberta as of September. I would assume then that if health is the chief concern, that all sodas, candy, processed sugar products … and fast foods … should then follow?”

She had to keep the press conference brief, as she was between meals…….

It is very ironic the health minister is the furthest from healthy, easy to spot that. What you fail to realize is she knows first hand people have trouble making healthy choices for themselves as the power of marketing grows. We’re speaking of majorities. It’s no secret CAD and USA are fat. Maybe the health minister should start cracking down on fast food chains. Banning them from close proximity to schools, stronger regulation of menus, and putting health warning signs at the entrances or right across the building with graphic pictures. Maybe extra tax on the crap foods and a break on the healthy. The only way to solve a problem is recognizing there is one in the first place. As long as there is a way to capitalize on peoples’ weaknesses, we must depend on government to make the right choice for us. My point is, she shouldn’t stop at tobacco bans if she wants respect. She needs to “excercise” (see what I did there?) her powers in an area she is most vulnerable to attack. Okay, Minister, you have our attention, now would be the time to “wow” us.

A good chunk of blame can also go on to the shoulders of food companies using targeted advertising of junk food aimed at children and teenagers. Ironically enough, cigarette companies used to do the same thing…

For all of you making excuses around ‘Thyroid this and that’, just remember, you don’t see too many thyroid problems in parts of the world people have no access to processed food or much food at all for that matter… It IS INDEED about stuffing your face with crappy food. Processed foods. Man made foods and preservatives. Now science is saying too much Dairy leads to IBS in some cases… ‘Crappy food’ is being redefined due to our obesity epidemic in North America.

Our industrialized way of looking at food is beginning to do some damage. Don’t buy int to that ‘organics’ nonsense either. It’s a scam and cash grab for activists.

Menthol smokers will have to buy at the reserve now, or switch to non menthol. Smokers aren’t deterred.

Why is someone who is that morbidly overweight a “health minister”? We’re not talking a few pounds here, we’re talking extremely over weight.

Perhaps her weight is a hormonal issue???? But if the dippers want to diversify the economy I suppose black market in smokes is an alternative. Another blow to what revenue stream they may have now that oil is tanking.

I see Sarah Hoffman got 68% of the votes in the election. That is no mean achievement. She is a teacher and I don’t know her health background if any. I know the NDP found it difficult to fill the cabinet with people holding the area of expertise required. Not their fault they did not expect to win. In connection with the smoking ban I don’t smoke but you should not legislate on self discipline issues. If people want to smoke let them. I would say that was wrong what the NDP government has done. I would like very little government involvement in personal matters. Perhaps I am in the wrong province, country and time.

You know the really ridiculous thing here, is that they’ve got the whole thing bass aackwards. If they were really serious about public health, they would have approved the menthol, along with all the other flavors, and band tobacco. Cart before the horse, typical NDP.
