Initially, nearly 400,000 members were registered to vote for the party’s next leader; however, the disqualification of approximately 250,000 individuals — just hours before the convention — raises serious questions about the criteria and transparency of the voter verification process. Reports indicate that the disqualifications may have been influenced by ambiguous “campaign finance” issues and allegations involving a foreign national, while simultaneously, other candidates received preferential treatment, including exclusive briefings from high-ranking government officials.

This situation is troubling not only because it potentially undermines the democratic process within the party, but also because it casts doubt on the broader electoral system that will ultimately determine the next Prime Minister of Canada. If a significant majority of registered voters are silenced through an opaque process, the foundation of our democracy is at risk. Therefore, we call on Elections Canada, CSIS and the RCMP to conduct an immediate and thorough forensic audit of the entire leadership election process. Such an audit should investigate the criteria used for voter approval, examine the possible influence of backroom deals, and determine if any instances of voter suppression or foreign interference occurred.

Our democracy demands that every eligible citizen’s voice be heard. In an era where transparency and accountability are paramount, we must ensure that all processes leading to the selection of our nation’s leader are conducted with the utmost integrity.
