Two Belleville police officers are being praised for confronting an armed attacker at a synagogue, with officials saying their actions prevented a potential massacre.

Constable Jeff Smith was shot before he had a chance to exit his vehicle but still engaged the suspect despite suffering life-threatening injuries, according to a statement from the Belleville Police Service. Approximately two minutes and 47 seconds into the gunfight, Constable Mike McCurdy arrived and immediately joined the confrontation.

The officers worked together to stop the attacker before anyone else was injured. The police service board and community have expressed gratitude for their actions.

The suspect’s vehicle reportedly contained numerous rounds of ammunition and gasoline, raising concerns about what might have happened had the attack continued.

The incident has also renewed concerns about security at Jewish institutions across Canada. Synagogues, schools and daycares have increasingly relied on security measures, including surveillance cameras, guards and police officers.
