Two-Tier Britain: Terror suspects bailed, Danny Tommo jailed
Five men suspected of terrorism offences, caught near a U.S. bomber base with their faces covered, were free within 48 hours, their names kept secret. Danny Tommo, a roofer and father of four accused of cutting a migrant boat, pleaded not guilty and was refused bail.

Tonight on The Ezra Levant Show: five men arrested near an American air base on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act were out on bail by Monday, while an English activist accused of cutting a migrant dinghy sits in a prison cell.
Start with how the five were caught. It wasn't MI5. It wasn't counter-terrorism police. It was a farmer driving home late at night.
At about 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, she was near RAF Fairford, the Gloucestershire base used by American bombers, when she saw three vans parked in her village and eight or 10 men with their faces covered. They ran as her car approached. She called 999. "I'm just a farmer who happened to live there," she told ITV. She said "there were definitely more than five" and that nobody official has been in touch with her since.
The five men, all British nationals in their 20s from London, were arrested under the Explosives Act and then further arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. By Monday all five were free on police bail with "stringent conditions." Their names remain secret. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said: "We know that Iran and their proxies wish to do us harm." Counter-terrorism police said: "To be very clear, this does not mean that the investigation is over."
Prime Minister Andy Burnham convened the Cobra emergency committee and said: "The investigation remains ongoing, and I would urge people not to speculate while the authorities establish the full facts." The presumption of innocence is a sound principle. But his own words that day suggest it covers only some people.
That same Sunday, the BBC asked Burnham whether Danny Tommo is a racist. Tommo is a young activist in the mould of Tommy Robinson who has led protests against mass migration, especially the small dinghies crossing the English Channel. "It's hard to conclude that he's anything other than someone who has racist views," Burnham said, while conceding, "I've not read everything that he said, I've not followed everything that he's done." He added, "I don't just throw labels on people," then called Tommo's conduct "the worst kind of hateful behaviour."
Saying so on the state broadcaster, with a jury yet to be picked from people who watch the BBC, risks what lawyers in Canada or England would call prejudicing a trial. Even Nigel Farage, who usually keeps a careful distance from people like Tommo, asked: "How is it that Danny Tommo sits in a cell while five suspected terrorists are out on bail? Is this two-tier Britain, or am I missing something?"
Tommo is accused of slashing a migrant dinghy with a knife in the Channel while, police say, a French coastguard official was still on board. He was arrested for offences including criminal damage with intent to endanger life and endangering the safety of a ship. He was charged only with criminal damage and with refusing to hand over his iPhone password. The 37-year-old roofer and father of four pleaded not guilty, chose a jury trial and was refused bail on Friday at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court.
"This defendant is not charged with an offence of political activism," his barrister told the court. The judge who refused bail, Deputy Senior District Judge Tan Ikram, is the same judge who in 2024 convicted three women under the Terrorism Act for displaying images of paragliders, like those Hamas used to attack a music festival, at a pro-Palestinian march in London a week after Oct. 7. He gave them conditional discharges, saying: "Your lesson has been well learned."
Compare that to Lucy Connolly. The Northampton childminder wrote an angry post on X after the 2024 Southport murders of three little girls at a dance class. She deleted it within hours. She was refused bail and sentenced to 31 months in prison.
The double standard extends to immigration. At the Labour conference in Liverpool on Monday, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced new refugee routes, with "around a quarter" of places for Afghan women and girls, alongside "Palestinians who have fled the horrors of Gaza." Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told those outraged by the plight of Palestinians: "We hear you. You were right." Yet Pew Research Center surveys found 97 per cent of Palestinians held an unfavourable view of Jews, and 79 per cent of Afghan Muslims who want sharia as official law back the death penalty for leaving Islam.
The Sunday Times reported that a former bodyguard of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh received asylum and citizenship in Britain, then allegedly played an "essential" role in a foiled plot to murder Jews in Berlin or Vienna. A British court had granted him anonymity for 100 years, until the newspaper had the order lifted.
Danny Tommo's case moves to Portsmouth Crown Court on Tuesday. Rebel News, which he approached through Tommy Robinson, is funding his defence and setting up a separate trust for his children.
