Jews are being mobbed in the streets. Synagogue entrances are being blocked or vandalized, and Jewish schools have been shot at. Yet, as Sheila Gunn Reid noted on Monday's Rebel Roundup, the Liberals decided the real problem was Islamophobia.

The government's special representative on combating Islamophobia, former Toronto Star columnist Amira Elghawaby, billed taxpayers $18,000 for a single business-class trip to London to discuss defining Islamophobia. Expenses included a $3,000 stay at a four-star hotel in Piccadilly, and Sheila said Elghawaby reportedly didn't even need to attend in person.

"This is just a busy work project to justify her $200,000 a year job," she said.

David Menzies noted the irony for a party so concerned about carbon footprints, but said the real motivation is votes. "This comes down to voting demographics," he said.

There are five times as many Muslims as Jews in Canada, he noted, adding that he isn't suggesting every Muslim supports Hamas. "But I think that's how the Liberals think."

Menzies said Jewish Canadians are now warning each other to hide their identity when heading downtown or to Mississauga, suggesting they don't wear a kippah or a Star of David. "Is that where we're at in Canada?" he asked. He compared it to the days when victims were blamed for attacks against them.

Sheila pointed to a growing online witch hunt, where anyone defending Israel's right to exist is accused of being a "crypto-Jew." Meanwhile, she said, Elghawaby collects $200,000 a year "finding Islamophobes under every rock."

Both hosts rejected the campus narrative casting Israelis as colonizers. "They date back there more than 3,000 years," Menzies said. "This is their homeland." Sheila said the movement ties together trans activism, pro-Hamas demonstrations and the land back movement in a way that doesn't hold up. "That is the Jewish land, and they didn't give it to anybody," she said.

Menzies called it an alliance of convenience between Islamists and Marxists, pointing to what happened to leftists in Iran after the 1979 revolution. And activists carrying "Queers for Palestine" signs, he said, should consider how they would be treated in Gaza. Sheila recalled a standoff a few years ago when a Pride march ran into a pro-Hamas protest. "I hope everybody loses," she said with a laugh. "That alliance won't hold out forever."
