Mayor Ashe Exposed!
Pickering, Ontario, has become ground zero for a shocking war on free speech and open government. Under Mayor Kevin Ashe’s “leadership,” city hall has been transformed into a closed-door regime that feels more like North Korea than Canada. Ashe and his allies on council have rammed through draconian rules to silence criticism: public delegation times slashed in half, no more question periods, journalists banned unless two-thirds of council “approve” them, and even a prohibition on recording meetings. Regular citizens who dare to post “impolite” comments on social media have been slapped with trespass notices (yes, actually banned from city property for “wrong thought”!). Meanwhile, armed police officers now stalk every council meeting, ready to haul out anyone who doesn’t toe the line.
Mayor Ashe’s control-freak obsession with secrecy and censorship doesn’t stop there. He’s even kicked out Rebel News journalist David Menzies, ordering Durham Regional Police to frog-march our reporter out of a public meeting under threat of arrest – all because we dared to ask questions and hold him to account. And when one brave city councillor, Lisa Robinson, stood up to this madness, Ashe and his council cronies punished her by stripping away an entire year’s salary through bogus “code of conduct” fines. (Her crime? Having the backbone to speak out against their diktats.) Now, in a cowardly new move, Ashe has shut down in-person council meetings altogether, citing phony “safety concerns” to hide from angry constituents. Democracy is supposed to be about discourse and debate, but in Pickering the only voice allowed is King Ashe’s – and he’ll use any tyrannical trick to keep it that way.
Enough is enough. Rebel News is launching “Mayor Ashe Exposed” to shine a spotlight on this outrageous abuse of power and to demand an end to the secrecy and censorship at Pickering City Hall. This bold campaign will hold Mayor Kevin Ashe and his enablers to account for trampling on the fundamental freedoms of Pickering residents. It’s time to tell these petty tyrants that we won’t let them turn our city into their personal fiefdom. Free speech, a free press, and open democracy are non-negotiable.
