'These guys are heroes': Saskatchewan MLAs help woman escape trafficking
'If your MLA isn’t hunting down foreign human traffickers and emancipating their sex slaves, then your MLA could be doing more,' said Lise Merle on Tuesday's Rebel Roundup livestream.
Two Saskatchewan Party MLAs, one current and one former, were instrumental in rescuing a Bangladeshi woman from alleged trafficking at the hands of Saskatchewan restaurant owners Mohammed Masum and Sohel Haider.
Cypress Hills MLA Doug Steele encountered the woman at the restaurant, where he first became concerned about her situation. He contacted then-area Sask. Party MLA Hugh Nerlien for help, and together with a social worker, the group helped the woman escape her situation.
Sheila Gunn Reid and Lise Merle, a Saskatchewan native, recounted the story on Tuesday’s Rebel Roundup livestream.
“If your MLA isn’t hunting down foreign human traffickers and emancipating their sex slaves, then your MLA could be doing more,” said Lise. “We need a standing ovation for men like this. This is what we need in this world.”
“It was a serious, coordinated effort by these two and a social worker to extract her from there, get her help, get these guys charged,” said Sheila. “These guys are heroes.”
