Chrystia Freeland appeared on American television to declare that the United States' democracy is "on life support" — because Donald Trump was re-elected. David Menzies and Tamara Lich had some thoughts about that on Tuesday's Rebel Roundup.

"I have a lot to say about Chrystia Freeland going on TV and saying the United States's democracy is on life support," Lich said, "coming from the woman who giggled like a schoolgirl when she froze my bank account."

Four judges have now agreed the invocation of the Emergencies Act — which gave Freeland the power to freeze the accounts of law-abiding Canadians for their political views — was unconstitutional. The appeals court has yet to rule.

Menzies noted that Freeland was "bouncing up and down like a cheerleader" when the accounts were frozen, adding that her meeting notes from conversations with bank CEOs show the banks appeared equally enthusiastic.

"Just give us a list of the mischief makers," he quoted one RBC executive as saying.

Lich said the banks cannot entirely escape responsibility.

"When you read their notes, they look just as excited to freeze bank accounts," she said. Menzies called the major Canadian banks cowards — "not so much capitalists as corporatists" — and noted the Royal Bank of Canada had previously denied Rebel News a pre-approved mortgage, and that Scotiabank had cancelled banking services for two individuals whose only offence was questioning why rainbow merchandise continued past the end of June.

The conversation also turned to new reporting that during the Freedom Convoy, lists of thousands of suspected supporters had their private financial data shared with banks across Canada — including Chinese banks.

"Nobody knows how many organizations it was shared with," Menzies said.

Lich shared her own experience: after TD froze her account during the convoy, she attempted to open an account at Alberta Treasury Branch. Two days before the appointment, she received a phone call cancelling it.

"They informed me they were unable to provide me service," she said. "Unbelievable."

Menzies closed the segment by making a point about Trump's push to allow American banks to compete in Canada.

"Wouldn't you say he's going to bat for you and me?" he asked. "I would sure love to see some competition, and some banks that would not bend the knee as our big banks did during the Freedom Convoy."
