Hundreds of anti-capitalist demonstrators gathered outside Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square this week to protest the Canada Investment Summit, an event hosted by Prime Minister Mark Carney aimed at drawing global investment into Canada.

Video captured by journalist Harrison Faulkner shows demonstrators carrying signs depicting a guillotine alongside the heads of Carney, U.S. President Donald Trump, federal minister Anita Anand and Loblaw chair Galen Weston. Many protesters wore keffiyehs and waved communist flags while chanting slogans such as "hang all the billionaires" and directing profanity-laced insults at Carney, calling him a "capitalist pig."

Several protesters were recorded telling police officers they should be brutalizing and killing summit attendees, while others qualified their remarks by excluding Indigenous, Black and Palestinian people from the threats.

The demonstration drew comparisons to earlier movements, including Black Lives Matter and unproven claims surrounding residential school unmarked graves, with violent rhetoric reflecting a broader pattern within anti-capitalist and social justice circles. Organizers described the protest as tied to ongoing land defence efforts, while signs referencing Blackstone and Blackrock suggested confusion among participants over which corporations they were actually targeting.

The Canada Investment Summit drew to a close Tuesday after garnering domestic and international attention as Ottawa courted foreign capital, with demonstrators on the ground rejecting who they characterize as global elites.
