Christine Frechette has called on Prime Minister Mark Carney to grant Quebec a special position as Canada works out the details of its relationship with the EU.

The request comes before the full details of the proposed agreement are known. Frechette’s push for a Quebec carveout is concerning considering the province is seeking special treatment before Canada has established what the broader agreement will look like.

The discussion around Quebec’s role in the agreement also recalls the province’s history of seeking greater autonomy from Ottawa, including two failed sovereignty referendums.

Quebec has long sought to have the best of both worlds in separating from Canada while also receiving equalization payments. 

The issue also comes as concerns continue to grow over problems facing Canadians at home, including homelessness, drug addiction and conditions in communities across the country.

Maybe Canada should focus more on solving its problems at home. After all, this whole thing started when President Trump asked Canada to please secure its borders and stop the drug problem.
