Syria is safe enough to trade with — just not to send people back to
Despite removing sanctions placed on Syria and appointing a non-resident ambassador to the country, the Liberals are still reluctant to send refugees back.

Syria's new president Ahmed al-Sharaa was at the UN General Assembly again this week — his second appearance since taking power, talking peace deals and the Golan Heights. But just one year ago, he was on a terror list.
Ezra Levant walked through what that means on Tuesday's Ezra Levant Show and asked why Canada hasn't come to the obvious conclusion.
The UN refugee agency's numbers tell the story. As of August 31, 3.8 million Syrians have returned home since Bashar al-Assad's government fell.
In Canada, four years after intake, 70% of government-assisted Syrian refugees were still on social assistance. The West was told to absorb the cost because it was temporary, because it was an emergency.
"The emergency is over," Ezra said. Assad's tyrannical government fell. The civil war ended. Canada lifted sanctions, removed Syria from its terror list, and appointed a non-resident ambassador in Damascus.
Under section 108 of Canada's own Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, refugee protection ends when the circumstances that created it have ceased to exist. "They're not refugees anymore. Legally, they are not refugees anymore," Ezra stated.
For comparison, Germany's chancellor said eight out of 10 Syrians should go home over the next three years. Germany is revoking 23% of Syrian refugee files reviewed this year and rejecting 95% of new claims. Austria is paying €3,000 per person to leave voluntarily. The UN's own surveys show more than 80% of Syrians in the region want to go back.
But Canada? Not a word from Carney. Not a word from Immigration Minister Lena Diab. Meanwhile, new Syrian asylum claims are still being processed.
"Ottawa says Syria is safe enough to trade with, safe enough to phone, safe enough to delist, just not safe enough to send the migrants home to. That's not a refugee policy. That's a permanent immigration program that we never voted for," Ezra said, slamming the Liberals.
He offered three steps to fix the problem.
First, reviews for every Syrian on refugee status in Canada; a voluntary return package of airfare plus $5,000 — a program Canada already from 2012 to 2015; and a stop to new Syrian refugee claims from a country Ottawa has just declared safe enough to normalize.
"A plane ticket and five grand is a lot cheaper than a lifetime of welfare in Mississauga or Montreal," Ezra said.
