Crowds turning out to drive Pauline Hanson from politics sound certain until they are asked what she has actually said. The chants are loud and the detail is thin. Talk to them for a few minutes and it becomes clear that many of these protests are running on slogans, not on any real grasp of her record.

What showed up instead was a mix of slogans, contradictions and hostility toward anyone who asked a question.
One activist branded Hanson a racist who wants to strip Aboriginal people of their rights. The charge was delivered with certainty. The evidence was not. I asked how that kind of rage lands with Australians watching at home, and whether it pushes people toward One Nation rather than away from it. The idea that they might be helping Hanson was too much for them to comprehend.

Another activist said they were worried Australia would become a country where queer people's rights are stripped away. One of the rights they feared Hanson would remove was bathroom access for trans women. I told them women's toilets, women's spaces and women's sport should stay for women only. That was enough to be called transphobic. I asked how many males have already dominated women's categories or reached the Olympics. There was no list, only the claim that one competitor under Olympic rules had come last. Coming last does not change who the category was built for.
The same activists insisted Hanson wants the White Australia policy restored. She has said the opposite on multiple occasions. Instead of producing a single statement to back the claim, they reached for a straw man about a parliamentary burqa stunt from years ago. The "leopards eating your face" line was offered up for voters burned by their own politics, then dropped the moment I applied it to Gays for Palestine. Support for gay people in Palestine was asserted with confidence. How those people live safely under that politics was left unanswered.
Then, in the middle of the chaos, the crowd found a new target: an elderly bloke on a bike flying an Australian flag. He was calling for peace. It did not matter. They mobbed him and demanded he be removed from the space. He seemed harmless, and he told them he was Italian, but the mob wasn't having it. The sight of the flag alone was enough for them to lose their minds.
I will keep walking these protests because the footage does what the slogans cannot. It shows what people actually say when they are asked to explain themselves.
