Author of UK report criticizing transgender youth care faces safety concerns

Dr. Hilary Cass, the pediatrician and former president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health who authored the long-awaited British report criticizing transgender medical procedures for children, revealed that she faces safety concerns following the release of her findings.

The Cass Review, commissioned by Britain's National Health Service (NHS) in 2020, is the result of a major independent review on children and gender identity. In her report, Cass stated, "The reality is that we have no good evidence on the long-term outcomes of interventions to manage gender-related distress."

In an interview with the Times of London, Cass, 66, disclosed that she has received "vile" abusive emails and been warned to stay away from public transportation in the wake of her report. "I'm not going on public transport at the moment, following security advice, which is inconvenient," she said, the Daily Wire reported.

However, Cass expressed greater concern over the "disinformation" surrounding her report, calling the criticisms "completely inaccurate" and "childish." She specifically called out Labour MP Dawn Butler's claim that the Cass Review had wrongly excluded around 100 transgender studies, stating, "If you deliberately try to undermine a report that has looked at the evidence of children's healthcare, then that's unforgivable. You are putting children at risk by doing that."

Despite the personal attacks, Cass remains undeterred, saying, "I'm much, much more upset and frustrated about all this disinformation than I am about the abuse. The thing that makes me seethe is the misinformation."

The Cass Review sharply criticized the transgender medicine industry targeting youth, saying the evidence for gender medicine is built on "shaky foundations." It recommended an "extremely cautious" approach to prescribing cross-sex hormones to trans-identifying 16 and 17-year-olds and warned of high rates of abuse and neglect among children referred to gender services.

In response to the report, the NHS announced it would review all transgender treatment, including that provided to adults, and immediately pause all new treatment for 16 and 17-year-olds. Scotland also said it would pause all new prescriptions of transgender medications for minors.

As the debate surrounding transgender youth care continues, Dr. Cass remains committed to shedding light on the issue, despite the personal risks and challenges she faces.
