Mark Carney recently returned to Canada from a getaway to Tuscany for vacation, releasing a video message to Canadians encouraging them to stop vacationing in the United States and buying American goods.

Sheila Gunn Reid and Lise Merle had some thoughts about the hypocritical nature of Carney's remarks on Wednesday's Buffalo Roundtable.

In a video address, Carney told Canadians that every time they choose to buy Canadian or travel in Canada they are sending a message — that "40 million of us are on the ice" and nobody is left in the stands.

Those comments are "easy to say when you're fresh off your Tuscan vacation," Sheila said. "If this country isn't good enough for the prime minister to vacation in, how dare he lecture us that we cannot go to a rodeo or to Bellingham to buy cheese?"

Lise pushed back on Carney's rhetoric.

"I am so opposed to the force-teaming," she said. "To say that there are 40 million of us that are all in agreement over this — it's a lie. It's an absolute lie." Sheila agreed. "What he's saying is uniformity equals loyalty," she said. "We're not. We're absolutely not."

The pair also dug into comments from B.C. Premier David Eby, who unveiled new welcome signs at the province's border crossing, which read "Welcome to B.C., Canada: Strong, Proud and Never the 51st State."

Sheila said the signage was off-putting to tourists who are looking forward to a trip to B.C., only to be greeted by an "obnoxious sign" trolling them. Lise agreed, encouraging any potential American visitors to "disregard" the NDP premier's remarks. 

"The sooner you aren't the premier of British Columbia," Sheila said, "the better it will be for all British Columbians."
