Carney's Brookfield-owned nuclear company relying on Russian uranium

Westinghouse is majority-owned by Brookfield Renewable, part of the corporate empire formerly chaired by Prime Minister Mark Carney, who retains Brookfield-linked holdings.

Despite Prime Minister Mark Carney's "build Canada" economic push, a Canadian-owned nuclear company with deep ties to his former employer continues to receive enriched uranium from Russia.

Westinghouse Electric is among the companies receiving Russian low-enriched uranium, or LEU, used to fuel commercial nuclear reactors in the United States, according to CBC News.

Westinghouse is 51 percent owned by Brookfield Renewable Partners, part of the Brookfield corporate group where Carney held senior leadership positions before entering politics. The remaining 49 percent belongs to Saskatoon-based Cameco Corporation, one of the world's largest uranium producers.

Carney joined Brookfield in 2020 as vice-chair and head of transition investing and later became chairman of Brookfield Asset Management. He resigned as chairman in January 2025 to seek the Liberal leadership.

His investments were placed in a blind trust, and a 2026 House of Commons ethics committee report noted that Carney retains Brookfield-related holdings and "stands to benefit financially" if their value increases.

Meanwhile, Cameco operates some of the richest uranium deposits in the world in northern Saskatchewan, including its McArthur River and Cigar Lake operations.

Yet Russian uranium remains part of the nuclear fuel supply chain.

The imports continue while Russian President Vladimir Putin's military occupies Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and attacks Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

Uranium mining and uranium enrichment are separate stages of the nuclear fuel cycle, and Western countries have struggled to replace Russia's substantial enrichment capacity.

But that's precisely the supply-chain vulnerability governments have spent years promising to address.

Canada has the uranium. It has one of the world's largest uranium companies. And that company owns nearly half of Westinghouse.

Yet Russian nuclear fuel remains in the equation.
