"Don't lie to me": Ezra Levant confronts Tim Hortons president over #BoycottTims

Ever since Tim Hortons insulted Canadian workers last week, their corporate executives have gone into hiding.

They ripped up an ad contract with a pipeline company called Enbridge — suggesting that Canadians who work in oil and gas aren't good enough for them. But then they wouldn’t defend their decision, or even explain it.

An apology? No chance. They went silent. Even as tens of thousands of their loyal customers asked, “why do you disrespect me?"

So I drove to the Tim Hortons head office in Oakville — armed with a petition signed by more than 8,500 Canadians demanding an apology from Tim Hortons.

At first, the executives refused to come down. They pretended they weren’t there.

Then they pretended they weren’t available.

Fine — I just sat and waited. And waited.

And when they realized I wasn’t going anywhere, the president of Tim Hortons Canada himself, David Clanachan, finally came down.

Watch what happened next -- and tell me what you think in the comments!

Boycott Tim Hortons!

17,712 signatures
Goal: 25,000 signatures

They told the government they can’t find workers — but Canadian kids can’t find jobs!

In a lobbying letter to Immigration Minister Marc Miller, Tim Hortons admitted its business would “struggle immensely” without international workers, while pushing to raise foreign worker caps, expand international student work hours, and create a permanent pipeline of labour — all for the very entry-level jobs that once helped young Canadians build skills, earn their first paycheque, and start their futures.

At a time when youth unemployment is rising and opportunities are shrinking, Tim Hortons is replacing local workers and lowering their standards.

If a company won’t hire Canadians and instead lobbies to replace them, Canadians can and must respond.

SIGN THE PLEDGE:

"I pledge to boycott Tim Hortons — no coffee, no breakfast — until Tim Hortons commits to hiring Canadians and investing in our next generation."

Will you sign?

Great first contact report Ezra. It is unfortunate that TH not only disrespected you by making you wait hours to speak to somebody, but they also disrespected everyone of those ~8500 names on the petition.
Finding exactly how many names it took to get TH to embarrass Enbridge is not straightforward but here is a quote from the Calgary Herald:
“The ads were pulled before an online petition from the group SumOfUs — which accused Tims of “shilling” for the Calgary-based company that transports oilsands crude — had even reached 1,500 names.”

You can read for yourself at:
    http://calgaryherald.com/business/energy/ewart-fury-over-timbitumen-prompts-tim-hortons-to-pull-enbridge-ads

So 1,500 names from a foreign lobby group made TH diss the Canadian oil industry. And 8,500 Canadians get dissed by TH when their names are presented.

I’m expecting a public apology and a change of COO before I set foot in any TH or Burger King property ever again. You can count on that.

These companies are not Canadian. They are foreign owned and just pandering to PC activists.

Jimmy – you’re a transparent hack. Pedal your crap somewhere else. I don’t give a damn what you thin

Wonder how much skin the “Brazilian owners” and “Warren B” will be seen to have in this game going forward?

Congratulations on going out and getting the story, Ezra. Not just journalistic courage, but personal motivation. Good to see.

I’m about 200 metres from a Tim Horton’s by the college where I am a student. I can see it out the window, in fact. The window from which I am eating and drinking a competitor’s products.

If you wanted to hear – “We have investigated these complaints and take full responsibility for our thoughtless mistake in putting the indulging fringe political activists ahead of pleasing our customers and being a good Canadian corporate citizen – the party responsible for this howling error in judgement has been terminated and we offer a promise to our customers never to capitulate to extremist political causes which are harmful to Canada again – Tim Horton’s Is a Donut shop not the UN.” – you were probably disappointed, but delusional to think you would find openness and honesty in modern corporate executive culture in the first place.

I only bought around $600 from Horton’s a year. But that’s gone. I don’t have to go t far to find another coffee shop. Tim’s has really gone down hill since OWNERSHIP left Canada.

Those of us that care about foreign interest groups interfering in our daily lives will continue to be involved and thanks to The Rebel coverage we can stay informed and make our voices heard. I for one have a very long memory Tim Hortons.

Clearly their PR people thought silence would make this go away. Ooops.

I really liked this piece. The Rebel needs to do more “events” like this by that I mean having scheduled things like on a normal TV station (Man do I ever miss Sun TV!). I have to admit that I felt for the CEO though getting cornered like that. I wonder whether or not he was actually in a position to speak his mind or whether he is just taking orders from above. It will be interesting to see what will happen in the days to come. I hope that some kind of apology is forthcoming.

Great piece Ezra. Not much of a Leader was that COO? It would be good to see more Rebel microphones under the noses of those in decision making and positions of responsibility. Perhaps get a mic in the face of the head of the OPP and see what they have to say about the long overdue report on the Wynne -bribery investigation?

Ezra had the Tim Hortons president cornered but he was never going to find out the real answer as to why they support middle east oil and not Canadian oil companies. The obvious answer to me is the middle east oil company bribed them with money to rip up the Canadian oil company’s contract. How crappy is that in a company that originated in Canada? Don’t think I want Tim Hortons coffee or anything else from them anymore either. Let them get their business from the middle east Tim Hortons, the people they support and let them choke on it.

Thank You Ezra – for your research and journalism, for having the guts to confront and ask questions, for giving Canadians a voice with the BoycottTims petition.

Great job Ezra. You have got a go get them approach that many do not like. And you get to the heart of the matter. I occasionally go the Tim’s, but not longer. In fact my wife and I prefer McDonalds coffee a lot more. Keep up the good fight for not only freedom but good ole logic. would not have happened if it remained Canadian owned IMO.

They say it was a “mutual” agreement and that they didn’t want to do “politics”… But they accepted the ads and there was just 1 week left to the contract! Things just don’t add up with what he told you during the interview… Thank god for Krispy Kreme :)
