Prime Minister Mark Carney's push to deepen trade ties with the European Union, even as Canada remains locked in a tariff dispute with the United States, is being met with sharp skepticism over both the numbers behind the plan and the political motives driving it.

On Friday's Rebel Roundtable livestream, David Menzies and Tamara Lich were joined by political commentator Jasmin Laine to discuss a post Carney put out on X, declaring that Canada and Europe are "each strong" and "even stronger together."

David questioned why, if the trade war is truly the existential threat the Carney Liberals describe, Parliament has not been recalled, and the Prime Minister isn't in the country working on competitiveness. After all, Canada-U.S. trade is worth $1.3 trillion, compared with $179 billion with the EU, with Canada already buying more than double what it sells to Europe. 

Laine reminded viewers that Carney flew to China and declared a "new world order" the last time trade talks with the U.S. collapsed; this time, he's turning to the EU rather than staying home to manage the crisis. 

"If there's anything that I could say to people with this: Watch where people start building an exit ramp onto, because that exit ramp may tell you a lot more about their motivation," she said. "Carney has been building an exit ramp to all sorts of globalist allegiances."

She also cited a recent poll suggesting more than 40 percent of Canadians opposed to a deal with U.S. President Donald Trump are unemployed, retired or students, arguing a vocal minority is effectively dictating trade policy for people who depend on its outcome.

"This is something we see so frequently when activism starts making its way into the institutional body, is that people who are truly a minority group, they end up being the ones who dictate the reality for the people most impacted by things," Laine said, "and that is just no way to run a country."
