Poilievre dares Carney to face the debt clock

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre dared the prime minister to stand in front of the debt clock and defend what he called the “monstrosity” he is creating.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre stood in front of a debt clock in Ottawa and challenged the prime minister to join him. On Monday's Rebel Roundup, David Menzies and Tamara Lich watched a clip of the event.

“I dare Mark Carney to come here and stand in front of this debt clock to show off the monstrosity that you are creating for this country, Mr. Carney, while you hand out more and more of our money to your corporate friends,” Poilievre said.

David predicted the mainstream media would blame the Opposition leader for causing trouble for the prime minister. The debt, he said, is something Canadians can't ignore, because their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will inherit it.

“You cannot spend like drunken sailors when you have the keys to the national treasury,” he said. David noted that fiscal responsibility is not a partisan issue and pointed to cuts made by the Liberals during Paul Martin's tenure as finance minister in the 1990s.

He asked Tamara whether the message resonates. People's eyes glaze over at figures in the billions and trillions, he said, but a minister who spent $16 on a glass of orange juice, like former Conservative MP Bev Oda, would lose them.

Tamara said she wishes Canadians were as upset about Carney's “flying culinary habits.” The Western Standard reported that Carney racked up a $175,248 airplane food bill on a 10-day international trip. She said the debt clock “should be broadcast somewhere every day,” and called the numbers rolling by “like a slot machine” staggering.

“We are dealing with a government that has absolutely zero fiscal responsibility,” Tamara said. She pointed to veterans and homeless Canadians who need help, and said she can't understand “how we can help other countries when we can't help our own people first and foremost.”

David asked why the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is mocked by the left for exposing spending. Tamara said she thinks some people look for the first thing they can find to be offended by. “I don't understand how you could feel that way about an organization that's really just trying to make you aware of where your tax dollars are going,” she said.

David said he is baffled that the Carney government appears popular, if the polls are correct. “I look at all the economic benchmarks, Tamara. Homelessness, food bank usage, unemployment, the cost of living, inflation. We're underwater,” he said. “And yet it seems the worse we do, the more popular the Carney government becomes.”

Tamara said the election campaign was “laser focused on painting Donald Trump” as someone to be angry at, and that is “essentially how he ended up winning that election,” adding that Canadians “need to take responsibility for our own country and stop pointing fingers everywhere else.”
