A quiet residential street in Woodstock, Ontario turned into a police staging ground last month, all over what officers now admit was a harmless piece of novelty hardware.

Residents of Harcourt Crescent saw a heavy police presence on September 15, with officers from both the Woodstock Police Service and the Waterloo Regional Police Service on scene.

Officers attended a home in the neighbourhood as part of an investigation. Inside, they spotted items resembling weapons, including what looked like a rocket launcher.

Police obtained a search warrant and called in the Waterloo Regional Police Explosives Disposal Unit to remove the items.

The items were inert. Police say they were a novelty or decommissioned piece with no explosive capability. No live firearms turned up. No explosive devices were found. Police say there was no risk to public safety at any time.

The investigation is now closed. One person was taken into custody, has since been released unconditionally, and no charges have been laid.

The "lesson" for law-abiding Canadians

Police used the occasion to lecture the public.

The service reminded residents of the risks of owning or storing items that closely resemble real firearms or military ordnance, even inert, decommissioned or collectible ones.

It says officers can't tell a replica from the real thing in the field, so anything that looks like a weapon must be treated as dangerous until proven otherwise.
