Socialist takeover of U.S. Democratic Party should concern Canadians
The Democratic Socialists of America are gaining influence in the Democratic Party, pushing radical ideas like abolishing the Senate and Supreme Court.
The Democratic Socialists of America used to be a fringe pressure group. Now, the DSA has become influential in getting candidates not only selected as nominees but also elected to office.
On Tuesday's episode of The Ezra Levant Show, Ezra argued that what's happening in America should be watched carefully in Canada.
Ezra started by pointing to Michigan, where Abdul El-Sayed won the race to become the Democrat nominee for the Senate. In Ezra's assessment, El-Sayed is of the most radical candidates to win a major party primary in recent American history.
When asked in an interview why he told staff he didn't want to comment on the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader because "there are a lot of people in Dearborn who are sad today," El-Sayed dodged the question entirely, pivoting to his opposition to the Iran war rather than addressing whether mourning the Ayatollah is an appropriate sentiment for a U.S. Senate candidate.
He has spoken approvingly of Sharia law. His wife wears a hijab. And he refused to condemn the September 11th attacks.
Then, there is Franchesca Hong, a Democratic Socialist who led polls in Wisconsin's Democrat gubernatorial primary, only to fall to a narrow defeat on Tuesday night.
In her own campaign video, she described going to a popular Michigan tourist destination and saying "I hate it here." She has called football "toxically masculine." She has called tipping racist and called Thanksgiving "incredibly painful."
When asked in a debate whether she disavows anything she told radical streamer Hasan Piker, she said no. When asked what in the DSA platform she disagrees with, her only answer was that abolishing the Senate was "nonpractical at this time."
The DSA itself, Ezra noted, is not a political party — it is a parasite attached to one.
"These radicals don't need to mess around with the Green Party anymore," he said. "They're going for the big time now, and they're winning." Endorsed DSA candidates are now required to support the full platform — including abolishing the Senate, the Supreme Court, and eventually the presidency itself.
"We might not have a president," one DSA official said cheerfully. "We could call it the head honcho of whatever."
An official from the DSA in Los Angeles was more direct, however, stating "The most important thing we can do is take that empire down from within." Ezra said this would be dismissed as a conspiracy theory if someone on the right made the claim about her.
Making the connection to Canada, Ezra compared the shift to the one occurring within the New Democrat Party. Under Jagmeet Singh, he said the party was deliberately harmless, one that acted as a strategic asset for the Liberals but never threatened Justin Trudeau's tenure as prime minister.
Avi Lewis, Ezra said, is different. He's a millionaire who has taken an intense interest in radical left-wing political ideas — he's playing a very different game from Singh's NDP.
"Imagine if the NDP were to actually get power," Ezra said. "That's what's happening with the DSA."
