A Liberal MP named Shaun Chen resigned from Parliament this week citing a serious car accident that left him physically unable to continue. But is there more to the story? Ezra Levant had some questions about Chen's claims on Wednesday's episode of The Ezra Levant Show.

Chen is, by most accounts, one of the most invisible backbenchers in recent parliamentary history, with sitting Conservative MPs publicly stating they had never heard of him.

In at least one year Ezra reviewed, Chen rose to speak in the House of Commons exactly once — he made sure to collect his paycheque every time, though. When his resignation was announced, the CBC dutifully reported the car accident explanation and moved on.

But Ezra says the accident story doesn't hold up under scrutiny.

"I heard today secondhand from police sources," he said, "that the car accident was so gentle — it was a fender bender, really — that both cars drove away. They didn't even wait for police. No ambulance was called." He added that Chen reportedly voted in Parliament the following day.

What Chen was doing instead of showing up to Parliament is the more interesting story.

Independent journalist Andy Lee — who reads Chinese and can search WeChat, China's all-in-one super app — found what the legacy media apparently didn't look for.

"There are just countless images and videos of him partying in the People's Republic of China with the Chinese Communist Party," Ezra said. When Chen did surface on Canadian social media, it was celebrating Chinese Communist Party events in Canada — not Canadian ones. "He's not a hidden agent," Ezra noted. "You don't have to accuse him of dual loyalty. He is loyal to them."

The party whip — whose primary job is to know where every Liberal MP is at all times and ensure they check in if they leave Ottawa — would have known exactly what Chen was doing while the rest of Parliament had no idea he existed. Ezra said the whip's silence on the matter is its own kind of answer.

He also raised the possibility that Canada's Five Eyes partners may have been involved in pushing Chen out.

"Perhaps Shaun Chen was so deep into the Chinese Communist Party that maybe our counterparts in the United States contacted CSIS and said, 'If you don't get this MP out of there, we're going to have to say something,'" he said.

Ezra was clear he was speculating — but noted the question of why Chen really resigned has not been answered.

A Toronto Sun column on the story briefly hit number one on the outlet's website before being taken down without explanation. The Liberal Party has deployed journalists to push back on independent reporting about Chen.
