'Defeated' trans activist wants inquiry into Alberta and Saskatchewan

Trans activist Fae Johnstone is calling on the Liberals to launch a parliamentary inquiry into Alberta and Saskatchewan's gender policies and to fund activist organizations in both provinces. Sheila Gunn Reid and Lise Merle say it's an admission that the notwithstanding clause has left them with nothing else.

Rebel News viewers may remember Fae Johnstone from Sheila Gunn Reid's memorable street encounter in Regina, when she was on her way to deliver a petition signed by 9,000 people calling on the YWCA to drop Johnstone as keynote speaker at its Women of Distinction awards. Now Johnstone is back, and Sheila and Lise Merle covered it on Tuesday's Rebel Roundup.

Johnstone is accusing the Alberta and Saskatchewan governments of bullying kids and is pressing the federal Liberals to launch a parliamentary inquiry, renew the federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan, and fund community organizations in both provinces. "If their provincial governments are going to bully those kids, our federal government should be standing up for them," Johnstone said at a press conference.

Sheila explained what that request really means, however.

"This is how the Liberals fight the culture war outside of their own jurisdiction," she said. Education belongs to the provinces, but Ottawa funds activist NGOs to do the work. "It's not technically good that the government violates the rights of Canadians, but they can do it easily through NGOs."

Lise wondered why we are "listening to childless trans activists — that are male — about what's best for our kids?" Alberta and Saskatchewan, she argued, are the only governments in Canada that have approached the issue with any compassion for affected families. "If the federal government even thinks about funding these kind of things in any capacity anymore, the people of the Prairies are going to revolt."

Sheila said the inquiry demand is really a concession. Both provinces invoked the notwithstanding clause to protect their legislation from activist judges and federally funded legal challenges backed by groups like Egale Canada. "Their hands are tied," she said. "This is an admission of loss."

Lise added that the country's finances leave no room for it. "The last thing that we should be funding is more exploration into men who think they're women," she said.

Sheila also pointed to what she learned covering Benita Pedersen's case before the Alberta Human Rights Commission: a dramatic flip in who seeks gender care. Until the 1990s, it was almost exclusively adult males. Today, it is overwhelmingly adolescent girls, who she said are told at school and online that being a girl is unsafe.

Those activists, Sheila said, are advocating for young girls to cut off their breasts and for young boys to be kept in a state of permanent prepubescence.

Lise closed on women's health care, arguing that women are being displaced in their own treatment. "You know why women can't get their own hormone replacement therapy?" she asked. "It all has to go in the trash."
